Chacala Mexico History

Located just 12km from Las Varas in Riviera Nayarit, Chacala has a long history with many stories and anecdotes to share. This seashell-shaped bay area of Riviera Nayarit was discovered in 1524 by the Spanish captain Francisco de Cortés de San Buenaventura. The near-virgin beaches of Chacala Mexico have since welcomed visitors of all kinds, from Dutch pirates to Father Kino, evangelizer that journeyed to his various missions from this coastline.

Chacala’s inviting warmth will follow you as you head to the Chacala beach, where it is common to see everyone enjoying the tranquility of this Nayarit destination. You’ll be tempted to play in the sand, enjoy some delicious grilled fish in one of the thatched-roof hut restaurants lining the shore, or cool off with a refreshing drink.

Beaches of Chacala Riviera Nayarit

On a tour of the beaches of Chacala Mexico, you will notice some very interesting sights. There is a giant tree that was once inhabited for a while by a woman determined to protect it from being cut down. You might also see a family watching the ebb and flow of the waves as they wait eagerly to catch some tiquiliches, a type of crustacean similar to shrimp. Tiquiliches are swept ashore by the waves and used as a main ingredient in a traditional regional dish.

Las Cuevas, Chacalilla, and la Caleta are the main beaches of this destination. Las Cuevas is known for its strong waves, Chacalilla is met with calmer waters, and la Caleta is the ideal spot for surfers.

Here, you can stay overnight in charming ecological boutique Nayarit hotels that feature exceptional spa services and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.  You can also spend the night in one of the local homes rented out to tourists. And, as if that weren’t enough, in 2002 Chacala Mexico was named a Gallery Town for its wide variety of birds such as magpies, pelicans, seagulls and herons, just to name a few. So don’t forget your camera, for each moment in Chacala Nayarit will be a memorable one.
